Honouring David's legacy
The David George Fund has been established to honour the life and legacy of David George – one of Wellington's hospitality pioneers whose vision, generosity and entrepreneurial spirit helped shape the city's café culture.
Best known for founding the iconic Lido Café, David believed in backing people, embracing new ideas and creating spaces where communities could come together. Throughout his career, he supported those around him to grow, innovate and pursue opportunities that strengthened Wellington's hospitality scene.
Established by David's family in partnership with Visa Wellington On a Plate and Wellington Culinary Events Trust, the David George Fund is a way of giving back to the industry that shaped him.
"We felt it was only fitting to give back to the industry that shaped David. We hope this fund helps others pursue ideas and experiences that might otherwise never happen." - Luke Irving, David's nephew.
About the fund
Each year, the David George Fund will support a Wellington front-of-house hospitality professional to undertake a self-directed development experience.
The fund is designed to encourage learning, curiosity and innovation through opportunities such as travel, formal training, industry experiences or other professional development that brings fresh ideas back to Wellington's hospitality community.
The David George Fund hopes to continue David's legacy by investing in the people and ideas that will help shape the future of hospitality here in Wellington.
