Devour These Playful Burgers This August

Visa Wellington On a Plate Manager Beth Brash looks at some of the burgers that have embraced this year's festival theme.

Each year we come up with a new festival theme that inspires participating chefs who like to have inspiration when coming up with a new burger each year. This year’s theme is ‘Play with your Food’ and it could not be more perfect for this year. I think we all need a bit of joy and fun in our lives at the moment and it ties into the true essence of great hospitality - it brings us all so much joy and fun.

Here are a few highlight burgers who have really leaned into the festival theme with some playful interpretations.

A Frankenstein Adventure - Zephyr Cafe

It's a Burger, Wellington - The Featherston City Tavern

Play on Words

The Featherston City Tavern - It's a Burger, Wellington

We only allow an entry that isn’t “between two buns” if it is on theme, and this one I couldn’t say no to! This is a perfect play on words - “It’s a Burger, Wellington” …Geddit!? Also a masterclass in grammar and how a comma can change the meaning entirely. Top of the class! Beef, cheese and pickle patty with Woody's streaky bacon, Swiss cheese and honey mustard dressing encased in pastry, with mash potato and gravy. ($26)

Artisan at Bolton Hotel - Crowd Sauced

Another great play on words! We don’t know what this burger is just yet as it will be decided by those lucky enough to go to the ‘Build a Burger’ Event, based on the most popular ingredients at the event and a possible 84,000 combinations. ($29)
