Eat Your Way Up SH1

June 29, 2019

Yes, it says Visa Wellington On a Plate on the label. But VWOAP goes beyond the CBD and Welly ‘burbs, and right into the regions of Wellington - the Hutt, Kāpiti Coast and Wairarapa, where you’ll find loads more on offer beyond the city walls.

We’re taking you on a foodie roadie - from J’ville to the end of the VWOAP SH1 line in Waikanae - with some of the best Festival events, Dine dishes, Burger Wellington burgers off of State Highway 1.

Festival Events

Meaty Issues

Where does your meat come from? Do you know how to smoke it? And what’s the best way to carve it up with TLC?

Preston’s Master Butchers in Porirua are handing you a backstage pass to meet your butcher at Know Your Butcher, Love Your Food. Roll up your sleeves, knife up and learn some trade secrets such as how to select a great piece of meat and cooking tips for the best eating experience, whilst tasting the delights of their stunning ethically produced meat and filling a goodie bag as you go to enjoy later.

Nature

People forget that food and the outdoors go hand-in-hand quite nicely. Kāpiti Coast is famous for its wild, rugged coastline and nature reserves. Immerse yourself in the beauty and produce of Kāpiti's backyard.

Hop away on an afternoon boat trip on the Kāpiti Island Foodie Feast, where Waikanae’s Long Beach Tavern, North End Brewing and Kāpiti Island Nature Tours invite you on a long lunch, exploring nature and local cuisine on Kāpiti Island. Take a boat across the Rauoterangi Channel to Kāpiti Island Nature Reserve, where you’ll discover the island, relax and enjoy views over the marine reserve, whilst Head Chef Ricky Dennes from Long Beach creates a four-course feast using ingredients unique to Kāpiti Coast.

Or Escape to Nga Manu to experience the sights and sounds of Ngā Manu Nature Reserve.  You’ll feed the body and soul in this four-course lunch to showcase the best of Kāpiti produce, seafood and artisan products. See kiwi and eel in their natural habitats, whilst hearing the call of native birds. Each course is matched with a beer and wine pairing from North End Brewing and Johner Estate, and the menu focuses on seafood from Kāpiti and produce from the Tararua foothills and the farms in between.

Beer

Kāpiti Coast is famous for its beer, so it’s fitting there are some good beer and kai events for VWOAP.

Tuatara Brewery invites you to come along and Summon Your Senses with a selection of bespoke brews and dishes using locally sourced fresh ingredients. The beers are chosen for their distinctiveness and ability to draw out specific flavours to complement or contrast the food match. With really great matches it can be hard to tell where the food ends and the beer begins.

North End Brewing is hosting Beer & the Beast at The Salt & Wood Collective for a relaxed and interactive nose-to-tail, three-course dinner, serving you different parts of one beast in many different ways, matched with beers poured straight from North End brewery.

But if you’re wanting a change from beer, enjoy a lazy limoncello afternoon on the Kāpiti Coast with the Limoncello Long Lunch. Start with a hands-on experience at Wellington’s only limoncello producer, Koakoa. Taste your way through their offerings with an option to make your own cocktail or kick back and have one crafted for you. Afterwards, make the short journey to Soprano Ristorante for a delicate, four-course lunch celebrating all things limoncello.
