Kāpiti Coast’s Visa WOAP 2021 food basket

August 11, 2021

Take a slight jaunt up SH1, and you’ll find the veritable food basket that is the Kāpiti Coast, a region that is teaming with local producers who provide kaimoana, craft beer, coffee roasters, fine meats, spirits and more! We take a look at what Kāpiti Coast has in store for Visa Wellington On a Plate this year...

Festival Events (1-31 August)

Festival events are one of the big draw cards of Visa Wellington On a Plate, dishing up new, exciting and experiential culinary experiences every year. This year’s programme is jam-packed with more than 150 ticketed events and free pop-ups across the whole region over the month, with chef collaborations, classes, tours, family events and culinary experiences that are anything but usual - and there are some wonderful Festival events on the Coast!

All Taste No Waste - The User Experience - Zero Waste Treats with Fi Greig - August 17

This is the Kāpti version of Kaibosh’s wildly successful All Taste No Waste series for Visa Wellington On a Plate 2021. Join Kāpiti chef, Fi Greig, from Sunday Cantina for this zero waste treats workshop, and challenge your ideas around food waste to lead the charge to a more sustainable food system by learning to create your own tasty, environmentally mindful treats. Even better - all proceeds go to Kaibosh Food Rescue, helping them to work toward their vision of zero food poverty, zero food waste.

Kāpiti Libation Tour - August 21

Celebrate the Coast’s veritable food basket by spending the afternoon touring with the Kāpiti Food Fair by coach and on foot to different corners of Kāpiti as you meet craft producers at Lemon Fellows, Koakoa and The Bond Store, Tuatara Brewing, Imagination Gin, Duncan’s Brewing, Dark Horse Coffee Roastery, topped off with a final stop at Hungarian cultural capital ANZIL. Each producer will enchant with their own inspiring stories followed by short tours and tastings.

On the way, bespoke treats will be created especially for the occasion by deli and caterer, Tom Thumb. They will pack you your own box of six foodie items in a Kāpiti Food Fair jute carry bag (yours to keep!) and can be eaten along the journey. Products can also be purchased from each cellar door along the way, so don’t forget your pocket money and a shopping basket!

Dine Wellington (1-15 August)

This year, we’ve asked Dine Wellington venues to create dishes that were inspired by the Wellington region’s stories - from its topography, history, weather, architecture, sculpture, people and more!

Paraparaumu venue, Refinery Bar & Eatery’s Dine Festival dish is a nod to Kāpiti's culinary treasures from the heights of the Tararua Ranges to the glistening coastal waters leading to Kāpiti Island, with a showcase of the Coast’s local kai. It also celebrates Refinery’s multi-cultured culinary team, merging elements of recipes from their various heritages to create Bambi Meat Kraken: parmesan-crusted Awatoru Wildfood venison with truffle mash, sage pumpkin purée, red wine jus with lemon and dill sous vide grilled octopus tentacle, thyme rosti, olive and Zany Zeus feta with a charred peppadew sauce.

Garage Project presents Burger Wellington (13-31 August)

Kāpiti always blows it out of the sparkling coast waters when it comes to burgers, with six available this year (and four more just down the road in Porirua!). We hear the weather is better up there on the Coast, but nothing really warms you up like a hearty burg to nourish you on a cold winter’s day or evening (we know the Coast gets them!). Check out some of our picks...

Out of the Bush - Passo Pizza Pasta Caffe

Waikanae Butchery wallaby and pork patty with provola piccante, agrodolce onions, oyster mushrooms, curly lettuce, mayonnaise and BBQ sauce in a housemade sesame seed bun, with potato shoestrings.

Garage Project Beer Match: Angry Peaches

Black Sheep - Waterfront Bar

Lamb patty with melted Kingsmeade Wairarapa Jack, shredded lettuce, red onion and beetroot relish in a Cafe Lane black brioche bun, with rosemary and garlic fries.

Ugly Duckling - Hola Mexican Kāpiti

Duck, ginger and sesame patty with house smoked streaky bacon, red cabbage slaw, Swiss cheese, soy and Sriracha aioli in a Cafe Lane brioche bun, with handcut Asian-style fries.

Up In Smoke - Smoked & Pickled

Pulled pork and brisket patty with smoked and pickled apple slaw, Zany Zeus smoked whipped feta aioli, smoked cheese and Garage Project Pickle Beer mustard sauce in a white sesame bun.

Hola Mexican Kāpiti - Chilli Orchard Cocktail Welly

Cocktail Wellington presented by Tommy’s (1-31 August)

There’s no way to relax like putting your feet up and having a cocktail. That must be why the Kāpiti must be so prolific every year when it comes to Cocktail Wellington - nothing like the chill, coastal vibe to get you in the mood for one of these delicious concoctions.

From Hola Mexican Kapiti’s refreshing Chilli Orchard with its slight kick of heat to Passo Pizza Pasta’s indulgently chocolatey Marsalino, from Refinery’s fruity Plumerella to Waterfront Bar’s piquant, raspberry Raumati Berry, there is a tipple to suit all tastes. Plus Hola Mexican and Waterfront Bar’s Cocktail Wellys are both available in non-alc versions so people who aren’t *imbibing* don’t miss out on all the fun!

And the bonus? Each cocktail is paired with a complementary bite to eat! Cheers to that.
